Compress an image to 100 KB

A phone photo is far too big for a field that accepts 100 KB. Shrink it to the limit as a JPG, right on your device.

Choose a file first

Phone cameras take photos of several megabytes, while many application forms accept 100 KB or less for a photo. The gap is big, but a portrait or a picture of an ID card doesn't need all that detail to look clear on screen.

The tool here is set to 100 KB and JPG, the format most forms accept for photos.

How a multi-megabyte photo gets to 100 KB

Reaching this size means lowering JPG quality and, sometimes, the pixel dimensions as well. A face usually survives this well; a photo of a page with small print may lose legibility at this size.

Crop first

Every extra bit of background eats into your 100 KB. If the photo shows a document on a table, crop away the table with Crop image first, so the whole size budget goes to the document itself.

If the form lists pixel dimensions such as 200×200, set them with Resize image and come back here.

Watch for a minimum size too

Some forms give a size range, with a minimum as well as a maximum. In that case don't squeeze the image as small as possible. Aim near the top of the range, such as 90 KB, so it isn't rejected for being too small.

Your photo stays on your phone

Image compression runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to our servers, which matters when the photo is of an ID card or passport.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose your photo

Pick a photo from your gallery or files. Common formats such as JPG and PNG work.

  2. 2

    Check the target

The size is set to 100 KB and the format to JPG. Change the number if your form asks for something else.

  3. 3

    Compress

Tap “Compress images” and wait a moment while your device does the work.

  4. 4

    Save and review

Download the image, open it and zoom in to check the face or text is still clear.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a photo to 100 KB on my phone?

Open this page in your phone's browser and choose the photo from your gallery. The target is already 100 KB; tap “Compress images” and save the result.

How can I see a photo's file size on iPhone or Android?

On iPhone, open the photo in Photos and swipe up or tap the info (i) button. On Android, open it in the gallery and choose Details from the menu.

Why is my photo now a JPG?

JPG gives the smallest size for photographs and is the format most application forms accept. A PNG of the same photo is much larger.

The photo looks blurry after compressing. What can I do?

Crop away unimportant edges and compress again, so the size budget goes to what matters. If the form allows a larger size, raise the target.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Compression runs in your browser on your device, and the image is not sent to any server.

The form wants a size between two limits, like 5 to 100 KB. How do I set it?

Set the target close to the upper limit, such as 90 KB. The photo stays in range with the best clarity possible.
