Mark what to hide, and the text and images underneath are removed from the file itself, not just covered with a black box.

Where is the file processed?

Mostly on your deviceThis tool runs on your device, except the option noted below, which uses our server and deletes the file right after.

Redaction runs in your browser by default. Our server is used only if you choose server processing: the file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed, and deleted right after processing.

Steps

  1. Choose your PDF: Tap “Select PDF file” or drag it into the box, from your phone or computer.
  2. Mark what to hide: Draw a box over each name, number or area you want removed, on any page.
  3. Apply redaction: Tap “Apply redaction”. Content under the boxes is removed in your browser, unless you choose server processing.
  4. Download and check: Download the file and try searching or copying in the redacted area to confirm the text is gone.

What it offers

  • Removal, not cover-up

Text and images under the redaction are deleted from the file, so they can't be copied, searched or revealed by moving the box.
  • In your browser by default

Sensitive documents don't need to leave your device. The server is used only if you choose it.
  • For IDs and contracts

Hide an ID, account number or address before sharing a copy with someone who doesn't need it.
  • Text and images

Redaction covers text and images in the marked area, scanned pages included.

Limits

The tool runs on your device, so the largest file it can handle depends on your device's and browser's memory. Very large files can take longer on phones.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between redacting and drawing a black box?

In most editors a black box only covers text visually; the text is still there and can be copied, searched or revealed by removing the box. Redaction here deletes the content from the file, then puts the box in its place.

How can I check the redaction worked?

Open the result and try to select and copy text in the redacted area, or search for the redacted word. If nothing comes up, it's gone.

Is my file uploaded?

Not by default: redaction runs in your browser. If you choose server processing, the file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed, and deleted right after processing.

Can I undo a redaction after downloading?

No, and that's the point: redacted content is gone from the new file. Keep your original if you might need it later.

Does redaction also remove my name from the file properties?

Redaction works on page content. The author name and other hidden data live in the file's properties, so clear them with PDF metadata.

Is it free, and does it work on phones?

Yes. It's free with no account and works in Chrome and Safari on phones, though marking small areas is easier on a bigger screen.
