Tool guides
Password-protect a PDF
Where is the file processed?
Protection runs in your browser by default. Our server is used only if you choose server processing: the file and password are sent over an encrypted connection, processed, and deleted right after processing.
Steps
- Choose your PDF: Tap “Select PDF file” or drag it into the box, from your phone or computer.
- Set a password: Choose a long password that's hard to guess and type it twice to confirm.
- Protect: Tap “Protect PDF”. The file is encrypted in your browser, unless you choose server processing.
- Download and send: Download the protected file, and share the password with the recipient through a different channel than the file.
What it offers
Real encryption
The file is encrypted with AES, the standard used by modern PDF software, so its contents can't be read without the password. In your browser by default
Encryption runs on your device, so neither the file nor the password reaches our servers unless you choose that.Opens anywhere
The protected file opens with its password in common PDF readers on phones and computers. We don't keep your password
We don't store the password and can't recover it for you, so keep it somewhere safe.
Limits
The tool runs on your device, so the largest file it can handle depends on your device's and browser's memory. Very large files can take longer on phones.
Frequently asked questions
Is it impossible to open the file without the password?
The encryption is strong, but protection is only as good as the password. Short or common ones like 123456 or a birth date can be guessed, so choose a long password that mixes letters and numbers.
I forgot the password. Can you help?
No. We don't keep passwords, can't recover them and don't break protection. Keep an unprotected copy somewhere safe on your device.
Is my file uploaded?
Not by default: encryption runs in your browser. If you choose server processing, the file and password are sent over an encrypted connection, processed, and deleted right after processing.
How do I share the password safely?
Use a different channel from the file. For example, send the file by email and the password by WhatsApp or a phone call.
Do government portals accept password-protected PDFs?
Usually not: many portals reject encrypted files because they can't read them. Use protection for files you send to people, not for portal uploads.
Is it free, and does it work on phones?
Yes. It's free with no account, and it works in Chrome and Safari on phones.
