What it offers

  • Appearance that lasts

Fonts are embedded in the file, so Arabic and English text look the same on another device years later.
  • Self-contained file

PDF/A doesn't rely on external links or extra software to display correctly.
  • Suited to formal archives

Useful for archiving contracts, official letters and theses when an archival format is required.
  • Deleted after processing

Conversion needs our server, so the file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed, and deleted right after processing.

Limits

Because the file is sent to our server, there are limits on file size and number of runs, shown on the tool page. Signed-in members get higher limits for free.

Frequently asked questions

What is PDF/A?

A kind of PDF designed for long-term preservation. It carries its fonts and everything needed to display it, and disallows features that can break over time, such as external links and encryption.

Will my file look different after conversion?

Usually not. Some elements that PDF/A doesn't allow, such as transparency in some versions or embedded media, may be adjusted or removed so the file can comply.

Will every file comply with the standard?

Not always. Some files need changes to comply, and some may still fail validation because of how they were made, for example damaged fonts. If you need guaranteed compliance, check the result with the validator your recipient uses.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

PDF/A doesn't allow encryption, so the protection has to be removed first. If you know the password, use Unlock PDF, then convert.

Is my file uploaded?

Yes, this conversion needs our server. The file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed, and deleted right after processing. We don't keep a copy.

Do government portals need PDF/A?

Most portals accept a regular PDF. Some archives, courts and universities ask for PDF/A specifically, so follow the instructions of whoever you're sending to.
