Compress a PDF to 500 KB

The target is already set to 500 KB. Add your file, compress it, then check its size and clarity before you upload it.

Mostly on your device

The “No quality loss” and Recommended levels and Target size mode run in your browser; the Strong level sends the file to our server over an encrypted connection, where it is processed and deleted right after processing.

Choose a file first

“File size exceeds the limit” is one of the most common reasons an online application stalls. This page opens Compress PDF with the target already set to 500 KB, so you don't have to try one level after another.

Portals set limits such as 500 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB or 5 MB, and the number varies from form to form. Read the limit printed next to the upload field. If it says 500 KB, you are in the right place.

Where PDF size comes from

Text typed on a computer takes very little space. The real weight comes from images: a page from a scanner, or a phone photo of an ID card dropped into the file. Compression works on those images, lowering their resolution and quality until the file gets close to 500 KB, while digital text stays sharp.

If the file won't get down to 500 KB

Some files simply have too many pages for this target, especially color scans made at high resolution. Forcing them down can make numbers and stamps unreadable, and a portal may reject a document it can't read. Instead:

  • Delete pages the portal doesn't need with Remove pages.
  • If the form accepts more than one file, split the document with Split PDF.
  • Re-capture the pages with Scan to PDF; a clean image compresses better than a shadowy photo.
  • If 1 MB is allowed, use Compress PDF to 1 MB and keep more detail.

Check the real size before uploading

Check the downloaded file itself:

  • iPhone: open the Files app, long-press the file and tap Get Info.
  • Android: open Files or My Files, long-press the file and choose Details.
  • Computer: right-click the file and choose Properties on Windows or Get Info on Mac.

Where your file is processed

The “No quality loss” and Recommended levels run in your browser, so the file stays on your device. If you choose the Strong level to reach a smaller size, the file is sent to our server over an encrypted connection, processed, and deleted right after processing.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose your PDF

Tap “Select PDF file” and pick the PDF from your phone or computer, or drag it into the box.

  2. 2

    Check the target size

The target is set to 500 KB. Change it only if your form names a different number.

  3. 3

    Compress

Start compression and wait a moment. Files with many scanned pages take longer.

  4. 4

    Download and check

Download the result, open it and zoom in to make sure names, numbers and stamps are readable.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PDF to under 500 KB?

Open this page and choose your file; the target is already set to 500 KB. Compress it, download it and check the size before uploading.

I compressed my PDF and it's still over 500 KB. What now?

Remove pages the portal doesn't ask for, or try the Strong level. If the form accepts several files, split the PDF in two. Avoid over-compressing if the text stops being readable.

Will my PDF look blurry at 500 KB?

It depends on how many pages it has and what they contain. Typed documents usually stay clear, while many scanned pages lose some detail. Always open the result and check it.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

Not with the “No quality loss” and Recommended levels, which run in your browser. Only with the Strong level is the file sent to our server over an encrypted connection, processed, and deleted right after processing.

Can I compress a PDF to 500 KB on my phone?

Yes. Open the page in Chrome or Safari and pick the file from Downloads or the Files app. No app install is needed.

My PDF is password-protected. Can I compress it?

Unlock it first with Unlock PDF using the password you know, then compress it here.
