For developers

In preparationThis page is being prepared, and we'll add to it over time.

If you're a developer or care about privacy and want to understand what actually happens to your file, this page is for you. We'd rather you verify than simply take our word for it.

What may come here

  • How local processing works

A plain technical explanation of how the tools run in the browser, and which tools use the server and why.

  • Ways to verify

Step-by-step ways to check for yourself that your file isn't sent anywhere when you use an on-device tool.

  • Notes on Arabic in PDFs

What we've learned about connected letters, text direction and extracting Arabic from PDF files.

Check it yourself today

In a desktop browser such as Chrome, Edge or Firefox:

  1. Open a tool marked “On your device”, such as Merge PDF.
  2. Press F12 (or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) to open the developer tools and switch to the Network tab.
  3. Pick your file, run the tool and watch the requests that appear.
  4. You'll see requests that load the page and a small usage-statistics request (tool name, success and duration), but no request carrying the contents of your file.
Tools marked “On our server” will show a request that sends your file to our server. That is expected and stated on the tool.

Is the code open source?

We haven't decided yet whether to publish the source code. If that changes, we'll announce it here.
